Evaluation - Question 1 (Part 2)

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is the second part of Question 1 of the evaluation. This nine frame grid that I have constructed, shows screenshots that I've taken from existing music videos in order to show how I've used, developed, or challenged forms and conventions of real media products according to the music video that my group and I created for the song 'Be There' by Kat Deluna.

Existing Music Videos:

1) This shot is taken from the debut single 'Beat Again' by UK boy band JLS. I've decided to include this shot because there is a clear link between the lyrics and visuals as the boys sing "My heart won't beat again, beat again" whilst doing a hand movement in front of their chest imitating their heartbeat to accompany the lyrics.

2) This shot is taken from the Sugababes music video 'About You Now'. I've decided to include this shot because in the video the girls are dressed smart and sophisticated, which is a similar feature of the mise-en-scene that we have included in our video. This shows how their record label would want them to be represented in the sense that they can wear and pull off different looks and challenge stereotypes although they are a pop girl band whom you would usually associate with flashy outfits and sleek/casual looks. All three of the members are also wearing a garment of the colour yellow, which shows how they have stuck to a colour scheme. This is similar to our video, but is different at the same time as each member represents four individual colours in our video rather than just one.

3) I've taken this shot from Alicia Keys music video 'Teenage Love Affair' because I feel as though it represents the love aspect of R & B. The majority of R & B songs, if not all, all contain elements of love and romance as a prominent convention. Therefore, I decided to use this shot because it reinforces this and as a R & B artist, it shows how Alicia is portraying her genre. The shot is also similar to the intimate meeting that the boy and girl within our music video experience.

4) This shot is taken from the video 'Call The Shots' by UK pop girl band Girls Aloud. The shot shows Nadine holding photographs showing memories of her and her ex-partner whom she is reminiscing about and singing to and therefore it serves as a flashback. This is similar to our video where we have the photograph of the meeting between the boy and girl which in the video is the actual flashback. Flashbacks tell a story and in this context of Girls Aloud's video, they show how Nadine feels sad about looking back at these images, but is now moving on and I thoroughly believe that the this part of the video matches the song and its message very effectively.

5) I've taken this shot from Taylor Swift's music video 'Mine'. It shows a close-up of Taylor who is happily singing about her boyfriend. The close-up serves to convey the content emotions that Taylor is feeling and how she is besotted with her boyfriend. The close-up also shows how Taylor is a young, fresh talent of the country-pop genre. We can see from her emotions in the close-up that she is very loved up and therefore she makes an easy connection with the audience who can instantly recognize this.

6) This shot is taken from Rihanna's music video 'Only Girl in the World'. I've used this shot because it shows Rihanna in a natural landscape, but the video has been given a pink wash over it as if Rihanna is in her own world. Everything is pink apart from Rihanna. This is similar to our music video where we've added a wash of each girl's individual colour that she represents when they are singing with the microphones. Similarly, as we've done this to enforce the colours that each member represents in our video, Rihanna has done it so that it reinforces how she wants to be "the only girl in the world" and this would be what her world is like if she was.

7) I've taken this shot from The Saturdays debut music video 'If This Is Love'. This video is a prime example of a girl band who are unique and represent their own colours, through a personalized colour scheme which is exactly what we have done for our girls in the video. This has always been an element that I wanted to include in our video and my inspiration came from The Saturdays.

8) I've taken this shot from Paula Deanda's music video 'Walk Away'. I've chosen to include this shot in my 9 frame grid because it shows where we got the idea to use the microphone prop in our video. As our band consists of four members, each girl took it in turn to use the microphone for the lines that they sung in the third verse of the song. This is similiar to Paula and therefore shows how I've watched other music videos. The lighting is also good in this video as there is a spotlight on Paula as she sings with the microphone to give emphasis on the lyrics. Equally, we've done the same with our music video where we've used a mid-shot of the girls with the microphone to show how they will "be there", where they are reassuring Ally who they like.

9) This shot is taken from the music video 'Killa' by girl band Cherish. I've used this shot because it shows a girl band consisting of four members all performing a dance routine together. This impacted upon when I choreographed our dance routine because as our band is also made up of four members, by watching this music video it allowed me to work out the positioning of the girls and I could observe how the dance routine would look for when we recorded our own. It also made me acknowledge the fact that we would have to use a wide shot to ensure that all of the girls would be included in the frame with enough space to perform the routine.
