Goodbye!

Well, it's come to that time where my A2 media coursework has ended and I am now finished with my blog. I have thoroughly enjoyed making my music video and it was a lot of fun and I've learnt so much from this experience!

Along the way my skills and knowledge have developed and I now understand the background of music videos by deconstructing them into various aspects and applying them onto my own final product. Although at times the course was filled with intense pressure, I believe that I have tried my hardest and worked to the best of my ability in order to achieve the best possible grade.

Goodbye!

Evaluation - Question 3

Gaining feedback has played an essential role in the whole process of creating our music video. This is because it allowed my group and I to see whether people liked our video and we could identify whether it looked realistic enough to match the industrial quality of existing videos. I conducted some research by talking to my peers, teacher and family members to get their opinion on our video.

School Pitch:

Firstly, I created a Powerpoint  presentation that my group and I delivered to our fellow classmates in order to gain feedback for what they thought of our initial ideas that we were proposing. The presentation involved all aspects such as locations, narrative and mise-en-scene etc. We also asked them questions during the presentation to get their thoughts and opinions on our ideas e.g. Sohail and Megi commented during the video that they didn’t think all of our locations would work because it would be very time-consuming. At this point we had to take several things into consideration, but luckily the locations were situated near each other which worked in our favour and we came to film during free periods which ensured that we met our deadline and stuck to our schedule. Sohail also commented that he didn't think our narrative would work because he didn't  think that having 4 girls and 1 boy would gel. Megi however, liked our narrative idea because she said it would be good to use 1 boy as we wouldn't need to recruit other cast members. This was a logical idea by the band and I, as firstly we didn't have a budget and recruiting other cast members may cause issues to arise as our schedules are not all the same and filming would be complicated as we would try to fit everybody in. Secondly, we wanted to keep 1 boy in the narrative because it adds a twist for the audience and gives them a  shock, but it also entertaining at the same time because they become engaged in the video and would want to watch the rest of it in order to see whether one of the girls end up with the boy or whether they find out that they each like the same boy. Ally commented in the video stating that he didn't understand how the girls would perform a dance routine against the white screen. However, when we explained to him that we would be choreographing it ourselves holding several rehearsals prior to filming, he understood this idea and liked it which shows how our dance routine served as an appealing aspect of our music video. It also conforms to the R & G genre showing how we are still representing our genre throughout our video. We took a recording of the whole presentation:

Vimeo:

Our video was first uploaded onto Vimeo as a way of obtaining feedback. We could see the amount of views that we received and it enabled us to see whether our video was proving to be a success or not with our target audience. As Vimeo is used by many students within our school as some of their pieces of work are also uploaded onto here through the Sidney Stringer channel/page, they could view our video and as the majority of them are in Year 11 and Year 12, their views and feedback are useful because they are of our prime target audience.  Here is a screenshot of what our views currently stand at:

From this feedback I’ve learnt that there is obviously a growing interest of our video as the views have been increasing over a period of weeks since it has been uploaded. I’m very pleased with this as peers have come up to me and personally told me they’d seen our video whilst others were watching it in school and they provided feedback for what they thought of it.

Youtube:

Mr Ayres then uploaded our video onto Youtube as a way of attaining additional feedback from people who are not within our school circuit. As Youtube is popular with many people and accessible by many, if they were to come across our video and leave feedback it would be very beneficial. I believe I am right to say this as when conducting research at the beginning of the course, I came across several other A2 music videos where I could leave feedback and comments as many others had already done.  Below is a screenshot showing the amount of views that we currently have:

I also asked my tutor and friends to comment. Below is a screenshot showing what they wrote:

From this feedback I’ve learnt that the majority of people enjoyed the narrative and thought that the studio /glamorous scene worked very well with the girls and the dance routine. This was the first draft of the video where 1 or 2 parts were out of sync. However, we administered this issue and the final version will be uploaded to Youtube soon.

The first comment by 'IDRISBHAYAT' shows us that he likes the lighting and thinks the video looks very professional. He also mentions that the song and narrative combine well together which is initially what we wanted to do in order for the audience to understand the story. It also shows how as a group, we have applied Goodwin's theory by having a link between the lyrics and visuals which allows the audience to interpret the song and the story. Similarly, the comment underneath agrees with this and this illustrates that people perceived our narrative correctly, which portrays how during the construction and post-production process, we  managed to construct our video effectively by ensuring that our narrative accompanied the lyrics.

The third comment shows that 'yyopsgen' liked the girls dancing together against the white screen as this is typical of a girl band. However, he suggests that we should have more of this as it reinforces the girls as a band. Looking back at this comment, I agree as I believe we have portrayed the girls as individuals by creating their own identity in their own location, but by incorporating more shots of the girls together, this creates consistency and reinforces the girls as a band within the R & B genre.

The last comment by 'royston1992' also reinforces what most people have said about our video; that it looks professional and has a good narrative. The only improvement he has suggested is to have the meeting between  Ally, the boy and the girl as a short clip within the video rather than as a still image. We decided to show the meeting as a photograph for the flashback because we wanted to add a unique element into our video. However, I do think that if we were to incorporate the meeting as a short clip it would work because we could change that specific clip to black and white using the monochrome tool in Adobe Premiere which would  inform the audience that this is a flashback.

Blog:

I posted the video onto my blog including the first draft and final version. I received some feedback as shown below:

This is Sam's feedback who is a peer and also stars in our music video. From her comment I've learnt that she likes how the video has turned out to what she at first anticipated. She likes the idea of the photographs and thinks that they work well with the narrative. Sam has also commented on our use of mise-en-scene and the individual colour that each girl represents, which she thinks looks "really effective" which is what I wanted, especially since I based my ancillary tasks on this colour scheme. She did however suggest that 1 improvement we could make would be to use a larger variety of shots. I personally feel as though we have used several shots, such as long shots when the girls are in their individual locations and mid close-ups for when they sing with the microphone. However, by Sam providing this feedback, it is constructive because it allows me to identify the needs of our target audience, so therefore we will take this into consideration for future reference.

This is feedback from somebody in Brazil who came across my blog. He commented on the first draft of our music video and said that he "liked the idea of the clip". Although the English isn't as coherent and fluent, Cristiano still congratulates my group and I for our efforts which suggests that he likes our music video. This shows that somebody who isn't in our target audience still liked our music video and therefore this is evidence that it appeals to a wider audience.

Ancillary Tasks:

Our ancillary tasks were to produce a digipak and album advertisement for our band Kandy Rayn. Below are screenshots showing the feedback I'd received on my final ancillary tasks:

Digipak:

This is Sam's feedback for my digipak. From her comment I've learnt that she likes the use of the bright colours used which are the girls individual colour that they represent in the video. She also thinks that my digipak coincides with my advert effectively as "they combine with each other really well". Sam has also written that is is "obvious that they represent the same girl band", which is important as it means that I have created a brand and identity for the band where they can easily be recognized by the target audience.

Album Advertisement:

This is feedback I received from Sam for my album advertisement. Once again Sam has commented on the use of the colours which caught her attention "straight away". This shows how my advert is appealing and engages the audience. One improvement she gave was to not use green text against the yellow background. However, I used this colour as it is the colour that I represent throughout the music video and I based my advertisement on the personalized colour scheme that each member within our band represents. However, taking this comment on board, next time I would tone down the colour yellow in order for the text of the girls' individual colours to stand out to give them more emphasis, but will still stick to the candy theme to represent Kandy Rayn.

Overall, from all the feedback I have received I can conclude that people like our music video and enjoy all of the elements we have incorporated into it. From personally talking to peers face-to-face, they have always commented on how they liked the use of the storyline and the costume that the girls wore during the glamorous scene. As my peers are of our target audience, I was very pleased to see that the video was appealing to them and that they were able to relate to the school scene and liked the change of location to where the girls sang individually which is where they met Ally. I've also learnt that the combination of my digipak and advertisement are very effective and work well together. It is essential that they link as they are what create an identity for the band and are what the audience can instantly recognize with. From my feedback, I've also learnt that the personalised colour scheme for the girls in the video was a strong element to include, as they influenced my designs for my digipak and album advertisement which proved to be impressive. It was very rewarding to know that all of my hard work and effort was paying off!

Evaluation - Question 1 (Part 3)

How my digipak and advert are similar to and use conventions of existing ones

Evaluation - Question 1 (Part 2)

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is the second part of Question 1 of the evaluation. This nine frame grid that I have constructed, shows screenshots that I've taken from existing music videos in order to show how I've used, developed, or challenged forms and conventions of real media products according to the music video that my group and I created for the song 'Be There' by Kat Deluna.

Existing Music Videos:

1) This shot is taken from the debut single 'Beat Again' by UK boy band JLS. I've decided to include this shot because there is a clear link between the lyrics and visuals as the boys sing "My heart won't beat again, beat again" whilst doing a hand movement in front of their chest imitating their heartbeat to accompany the lyrics.

2) This shot is taken from the Sugababes music video 'About You Now'. I've decided to include this shot because in the video the girls are dressed smart and sophisticated, which is a similar feature of the mise-en-scene that we have included in our video. This shows how their record label would want them to be represented in the sense that they can wear and pull off different looks and challenge stereotypes although they are a pop girl band whom you would usually associate with flashy outfits and sleek/casual looks. All three of the members are also wearing a garment of the colour yellow, which shows how they have stuck to a colour scheme. This is similar to our video, but is different at the same time as each member represents four individual colours in our video rather than just one.

3) I've taken this shot from Alicia Keys music video 'Teenage Love Affair' because I feel as though it represents the love aspect of R & B. The majority of R & B songs, if not all, all contain elements of love and romance as a prominent convention. Therefore, I decided to use this shot because it reinforces this and as a R & B artist, it shows how Alicia is portraying her genre. The shot is also similar to the intimate meeting that the boy and girl within our music video experience.

4) This shot is taken from the video 'Call The Shots' by UK pop girl band Girls Aloud. The shot shows Nadine holding photographs showing memories of her and her ex-partner whom she is reminiscing about and singing to and therefore it serves as a flashback. This is similar to our video where we have the photograph of the meeting between the boy and girl which in the video is the actual flashback. Flashbacks tell a story and in this context of Girls Aloud's video, they show how Nadine feels sad about looking back at these images, but is now moving on and I thoroughly believe that the this part of the video matches the song and its message very effectively.

5) I've taken this shot from Taylor Swift's music video 'Mine'. It shows a close-up of Taylor who is happily singing about her boyfriend. The close-up serves to convey the content emotions that Taylor is feeling and how she is besotted with her boyfriend. The close-up also shows how Taylor is a young, fresh talent of the country-pop genre. We can see from her emotions in the close-up that she is very loved up and therefore she makes an easy connection with the audience who can instantly recognize this.

6) This shot is taken from Rihanna's music video 'Only Girl in the World'. I've used this shot because it shows Rihanna in a natural landscape, but the video has been given a pink wash over it as if Rihanna is in her own world. Everything is pink apart from Rihanna. This is similar to our music video where we've added a wash of each girl's individual colour that she represents when they are singing with the microphones. Similarly, as we've done this to enforce the colours that each member represents in our video, Rihanna has done it so that it reinforces how she wants to be "the only girl in the world" and this would be what her world is like if she was.

7) I've taken this shot from The Saturdays debut music video 'If This Is Love'. This video is a prime example of a girl band who are unique and represent their own colours, through a personalized colour scheme which is exactly what we have done for our girls in the video. This has always been an element that I wanted to include in our video and my inspiration came from The Saturdays.

8) I've taken this shot from Paula Deanda's music video 'Walk Away'. I've chosen to include this shot in my 9 frame grid because it shows where we got the idea to use the microphone prop in our video. As our band consists of four members, each girl took it in turn to use the microphone for the lines that they sung in the third verse of the song. This is similiar to Paula and therefore shows how I've watched other music videos. The lighting is also good in this video as there is a spotlight on Paula as she sings with the microphone to give emphasis on the lyrics. Equally, we've done the same with our music video where we've used a mid-shot of the girls with the microphone to show how they will "be there", where they are reassuring Ally who they like.

9) This shot is taken from the music video 'Killa' by girl band Cherish. I've used this shot because it shows a girl band consisting of four members all performing a dance routine together. This impacted upon when I choreographed our dance routine because as our band is also made up of four members, by watching this music video it allowed me to work out the positioning of the girls and I could observe how the dance routine would look for when we recorded our own. It also made me acknowledge the fact that we would have to use a wide shot to ensure that all of the girls would be included in the frame with enough space to perform the routine.

Evaluation - Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our Music Video:

(you can click on the image to enlarge it)

1) This shot taken from the music video shows a link between the lyrics and visuals because during the chorus, the lyrics "Turn around, cos' I'm right there" are sung. As you can see from the shot, the girls and I are doing our dance routine where we turn around and point as we do this to accompany the lyrics, as demonstrated by our arms being in the air which shows how we are pointing with our fingers.

2) This shot typifies the way our record label would want our band as an established artist to be presented, because it shows Megi dressed  in smart clothes, which challenges the stereotypes of women within the R & B genre who feel that they need to dress quite sexy and seductive in order to appeal to a mass audience, especially their target audience. This shot portrays our band as positive role models because the rest of the girls in the video also wear smart clothing during their individual scenes in their locations which reinforces how you can still dress smart and achieve certain things. Megi is also wearing pink, which is her individual colour that she represents throughout the video and therefore represents the unique colour element of our brand.

3) This shot illustrates how our music video uses genre, because all of the girls are dressed glamorous, which is a generic convention of the R & B genre. Many female R & B artists often dress glamorous, which outfits including sequins and lots of 'bling' accessories to go with their outfit followed by vibrant make-up. The glamorous look is one of the looks we were going for in our music video, as well as the smart look (as mentioned above in still 2) to show the flamboyant sides of the girls and their versatility. The white screen in the background also creates a studio effect which is a typical convention of the R & B genre, where the artists are often dressed in flashy outfits against a white (sometimes vibrant colours too), studio background.

4) This shot is an intertextual reference because it is actually a still photograph incorporated into our video. It serves as a flashback in the video and its purpose is to portray the intimate meeting between the boy and the girl. This is an element we suggested incorporating into our music video because it tells a story which helps to develop the narrative for the audience.

5) This shot demonstrates our use of camera because it shows a close-up of Vanessa singing in her location. The purpose of this shot was to show the intense emotions that Vanessa was feeling towards the boy, Ally who she has strong feelings for. Close-ups are often used to convey emotions so therefore our use of camera here has been used appropriately and accordingly  in relation to the song. It is a vital that we use a variety of shots because it is important to portray the emotions in order to connect to the audience and so that they understand the narrative. This still is also played during an instrumental part of the song in the video so therefore adds emphasis and reinforces the emotional attachment that Vanessa has.

6) This shot demonstrates our use of lighting because it shows that we've added a red wash over the original clip in order to assert the colour red, that Samantha represents throughout the video. We did this in post-production and therefore it shows how we've adapted the features of Adobe Premiere and thus our techniques have developed in the process of this. We added this colour wash because it reinforces the colour scheme that the girls in the video embody and represent.

7) This shot demonstrates our use of mise-en-scene because it shows how we used the microphones as props with the girls in the glamorous scene. This is an element we decided to include as part of our mise-en-scene because it makes the girls look like professional R & B singers and makes the band look authentic. It also shows how the girls are versatile and can also be on stage performers.

8) I've chosen this shot because we got this idea of the school narrative from Britney Spears debut single 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'. This song was a huge success for Britney and sold 500,000 copies of the record on the first day of its release and is therefore known by audiences worldwide. This shows that I've watched this video where we got the idea to to adapt the narrative but adjusted it by adding a twist of our own i.e Britney is bored in her lesson, whereas our girls are bored and switched off because they are thinking about Ally. Therefore, it also shows how our narrative is realistic. Although Britney is wearing school uniform in her video, we decided to let the girls in our video dress smart/casual to portray how they are 6th form students.

9) I've also chosen this shot because I got the idea of showing Megi's eye from Paula Deanda's music video 'Easy'. Paula Deanda is an R & B artist whose music I like. Instantly when we were creating our storyboard, I thought about the opening of Paula's video for 'Easy' as there are different shots shown of Paula through things such as her lips, eyes and jewellery. I suggested that we incorporate this into our video of each girl and a particular element e.g. Vanessa's legs, Megi's eyes, Samantha's ring and my dress. Therefore, this shows that I've watched other music videos which inspired my ideas for our video.
