Song Choice

Initially, we were deciding to do a song by a female artist as we wanted to have a girl group for our video. We looked at songs by Cheryl Cole, The Saturdays, The Pussycat Dolls and Kat Deluna as they are all established artists with songs within the Pop and R'n'B genre; all of which my group listen to. We did a brainstorm and tried to establish what the main concept of each song was and how we could incorporate our ideas to match the lyrics. We brainstormed the main concepts of all of the songs we were considering using, Below is a picture of my brainstorm (you can click on the picture to enlarge it).

Cheryl Cole - 'Fight For This Love'

'Fight For This Love' by Cheryl Cole is a song about metaphorically 'fighting' to make a deteriorating relationship work. Cheryl is singing about how her and her partner can put their differences aside in order to make their relationship work and succeed. People will be able to relate to the song as many couples face relationship problems in today's society.  If we are to use this song for our video, we will probably create a narrative for our video unlike Cheryl has by using a boy and girl who are supposedly in a relationship and experiencing problems who try to fix it. Cheryl has a consistent theme and house-style throughout this video consisting of red, black and white. Red connotes love and passion so this could be a potential element we include in our video.

The Saturdays - 'Higher'

'Higher' by The Saturdays is a song about female independence. The Saturdays are out and about in America in the video enjoying themselves, showing how they are happy being single, independent women. This is a good song choice for our group as we want to have a girl band and we could create a strong narrative which portrays female independence and dominance. The song talks about girls who are in control of their lives and do not need to rely on men. Our girl band is going to consist of about four girls, so if we were to choose this song we could have a narrative focusing on each of the girls individual and independent lives.

The Saturdays - 'Ego'

'Ego' by The Saturdays is another song which focuses on relationships, but where the woman is in control and telling her partner that he needs to "have a sit down with your ego". The video shows each member as a woman with 'powers' making them dominant and controlling one egotistical boy. Again, I think if we choose this song we could have a narrative challenging the stereotype of women being vulnerable and having to rely on men because the woman is breaking free from her controlling/dominant boyfriend. We could show the break-up of a relationship as a positive thing as the woman can now be free from suppression and inferiority which could send a positive message and moral to women in this position.

The Pussycat Dolls - 'I Hate This Part'

'I Hate This Part' by The Pussycat Dolls is a song about a destructive relationship. The woman is tired of trying and wants to give up, which also shows that she is in control and knows what she wants. If we chose this song, we would have a narrative showing a boy and girl unlike the Pussycat Dolls who just focus on the group and scenery. The scenery they use for the girls shows how they are free. We could follow this concept if we choose this song, but will add our own twist on it to make it unique.

*Note - I haven't included Kat Deluna ft Busta Rhymes - 'Run The Show' as it is featured on another post on my blog entitled "Mise-en-scene".
